A Familiar Tradition

One of the most fun parts of celebrating Halloween is carving pumpkins into jack o’ lanterns. Imagination is the only limit, and the designs being carved seem to get more creative every year! From pop culture references to more traditional “faces,” there’s plenty of ways for the carver to express their personality.

You’ll Need:

  • 1 Pack of Wonder® Classic Hamburger Buns

  • 1-1/2 lb ground chuck

  • 1 Pack of American cheese

  • 1-1/2 tsp kosher salt

  • 1-1/2 tsp cracked black pepper

  • Hamburger toppings of your choice

A Delicious Twist

Getting to carve a pumpkin speaks to kids of all ages—whether they’re nine or ninety. This recipe offers an extra chance to do some decorating, and this time, it’s edible! Have every member of your family carefully carve their own jack o’ lantern face into a slice of American cheese. This version of jack o’ lantern carving goes a whole lot quicker, and you can eat your mess as you make it! If younger kids are involved in your carving, try out a tablespoon. This will still be solid enough to make shapes out of cheese slices, but dull enough to avoid any unwanted cuts!

Follow these steps:

1.     Preheat cast iron skillet to medium-medium high heat (about 375° F).

2.     While the skillet is preheating, have each person eating a burger carefully carve a jack o’ lantern face into a slice of American cheese.

3.     In a large bowl, combine beef, salt, and pepper. Mix with hands to combine.

4.     Divide the meat into quarters. Take one quarter and press into the shape of a patty, about ¾ inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the middle of the patty to prevent bulging during cooking. Repeat with the rest of the meat.

5.     Place burgers on the skillet, cooking 4-5 minutes on each side until burgers have reached the desired doneness. Remove from heat.

6.     Set the cheese on top of the burger, allowing to melt slightly. Serve open-faced so everyone can enjoy their burger’s gooey getup!
