Wheat and whole grains: What? Why? And how much?

It's no wonder Americans don't eat enough whole grains. With so many different types of them, most of us just don't know how much is enough. Fortunately, Wonder® bread understands that, and we’re ready to share what we know about grains – in three easy-to-digest pieces.

What's the difference between white, wheat and whole grain?

White and wheat flours are made from refined grains, meaning they only contain part of the original grain kernel. Whole grains, on the other hand, include the entire kernel - like their name implies. They're the healthier type of grain and can be found in several forms, including whole wheat flour, oatmeal, whole cornmeal and brown rice.

Why should I eat whole grains?

According to the FDA, "diets rich in whole grain foods and other plant foods and low in total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease and some cancers."

How much do I need of each?

Each slice of Wonder bread is filled with about one sixth of the overall grains adults need daily.* So eating six slices a day is a wonderful start.

But there is a little more to getting your grains right. The USDA recommends you get half of all your grains from whole grains. That means three slices of a Wonder White bread plus three slices of Wonder Stoneground 100% Whole Wheat bread, and you're good until tomorrow.
