Top-of-the-Morning Wonder bread Pudding Recipe

Serves 4 to 6 cups

1 large egg

1/4 cup sugar

2 cups milk

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon salt

5 slices day-old Wonder bread, cut into cubes

1/4 cup raisins

Ground nutmeg

Heavy whipping cream, for serving (optional)

Preheat the oven to 350F. Lightly butter an 8 by 8-inch baking dish.

Combine the egg, sugar, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and salt in a large mixing bowl; beat well. Add the bread cubes and raisins, and mix well. Pour into the prepared dish. Sprinkle the top with nutmeg. Bake, uncovered, for 1 hour, or until golden brown, the top puffs and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.

Spoon on to plates and serve warm. If desired, pour a little heavy whipping cream over the top of each piece just before serving.

The story behind the sensation.

"This is a twist on a recipe I saw in a newspaper and have been making for more than 20 years. Don't be surprised when the pudding shrinks somewhat after it is removed from the oven. Nothing is lost: pour a little cold heavy cream over the warm pudding, and you'll be in heaven."
